Art Carney (1918-2003) was an actor in film, stage, television, and radio. He played many roles, but is best known for his portrayal of upstairs neighbor and sewer worker Ed Norton, opposite Jackie Gleason’s Ralph Kramden, in the popular television comedy show The Honeymooners.
In 1954, a year before he started doing The Honeymooners, he recorded “Santa and The Doodle-Li-Boop” and released it with “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas” (columbia 4-40400). His retelling of “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas” has the same annoying type of jazzy beatnik style drum beat as “Santa and The Doodle-Li-Boop,” provided by legendary drummer Sam “Mr. Rhythm” Ulano. Both songs were later released as a bootleg on green vinyl on “Sewer Records.”
Although obviously meant as a novelty song, it definitely stands out in my mind as an awful christmas song.
Beware - after you hear this song it will be hard to get the earworm out of your head.
