Universal Robot Band - Disco Christmas

Universal Robot Band - Disco Christmas

Universal Robot Band were an American disco group consisting of the members of Kleeer - Woody Cunningham (vocals/drums), Richard Lee (vocals/guitar), Paul Crutchfield (vocals/percussion) and Norman Durham (vocals/bass/keyboards). Their first single, “Dance and Shake your Funky Tambourine” was an international underground smash, later covered by Inner City Express. Their second album included the brilliant disco track “Freak With Me,” along with “Doing Anything Tonight” and “Dancing Disco Party.” They toured and recorded as the Universal Robot Band for two years. After that the members broke away to regroup again as Kleeer. Patrick Adams kept the name Universal Robot Band, which he used sporadically well into the 1980’s.

In 1977 the Universal Robot Band released a 12″ Christmas disco single called “Disco Christmas” (Red Greg Records (US) / 1977 / RG-216). The song features a spoken dialogue between Santa and Rudolph. The conversation between them becomes bitter when Santa implies Rudolph is ugly…

Santa: “Hey, do you still think I’m a jive turkey?
Rudolph: “No, but you’re fat like a turkey, and I’ll be damned if you can fit down that chimney!

By the end of the record, Santa fires Rudolph.
