During the 1980s, little girls were delighted by the sweet, fruity smells of Strawberry Shortcake dolls made by the Kenner Toy Company. They were dolls based on a popular line of greeting cards from the American Greetings Corporation. The unique marketing approach for these dolls was that each one was made to emit a long lasting fragrance of fruits, flowers, and candies. The original design of Strawberry Shortcake, and her cat Custard (as well as a subsequent thirty-two characters), was done in 1977 by Muriel Fahrion, while working as a greeting card illustrator at American Greetings.
Strawberry Shortcake was a cutesy little girl with cutesy little friends. Strawberry Shortcake, along with Blueberry Muffin, Huckleberry Pie, Lemon Meringue, Raspberry Tart, Orange Blossom, Mint Tulip, Almond Tea, Cafe O’le, Plum Puddin, Peach Blush, Apple Dumplin, and all of the rest of her friends (and their pets), harvested the berries and protected Strawberryland from the evil, yet stupid, Purple Pieman and Sour Grapes. They worked as a team to protect what they loved. With the help of the Berrykins, who made the berries smell berry sweet, and The Berry Princess, they made Strawberry land a beautiful place to live. The Strawberry Shortcake line of characters each had their own fruity or dessert-themed name with clothing to match, and they each had a dessert or fruit named pet. Like the Strawberry Shortcake doll, all the other characters’ dolls also had hair scented to match their dessert or fruit theme.
Strawberry Shortcake became a huge fad which spawned several related products, such as dollhouses, sticker albums, children’s clothes, bedding, furniture, games, and several other products, most of which were berry scented, Several videos and videogames were also made featuring the characters. The marketing worked, and before long their popularity prompted more and more friends. The franchise is still running strong, with the most recent activity being the release of a CGI-animated feature film.
In 2003, a Strawberry Shortcake Christmas movie on DVD, as well as a CD, called “Berry, Merry Christmas,” was released, which features a song called “Call Me Santa.” I don’t think I can say it any better than the DVD cover:
It’s the berriest, merriest Christmas ever with Strawberry Shortcake and Honey Pie Pony and all their friends! Christmas is coming! Strawberry Shortcake wants to do something special for her friends, so she travels to a magical place called Holidayland with Honey Pie Pony, searching for the perfect presents. And she finds them! Then, a trip to the North Pole and a visit with Santa make the adventure truly wonderful. Unfortunately, a pile of melting snowballs turns Strawberry’s carefully selected gifts into a soggy mess. In the end, Strawberry learns that the best gift of all is the gift of friendship.
