Here is a sorrowful country Christmas song, by Little Betty Ashley and J.W. Thompson called “The Christmas Dolly.” The song tells the story of a man who is Christmas shopping in a department store, when he overhears a young girl, who says that her mom is unemployed and her daddy is dead. The little girl asks a clerk how much a doll costs, and the clerk ends up selling the doll to her for only 2 pennies. The pitiful vocals sound as if they are doing their best to cry while telling their sad story.
The cynical side of me can’t help but feel that the little girl is working as a shill in a grifter scam, and her dad is sitting outside with the car running, and the back seat is filled with other dolls that they have picked up at bargain basement prices, from other suckers sympathetic clerks.
